Many people have been reportedly killed by suspected bandits after an attack was launched on the Ayati settlement, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.

Some suspected bandits were said to have attacked the Ayati settlement yesterday, leading to the death of many residents.

Commiserating with the residents of the settlement, the Governor of the state, Rev Fr Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia expresses deep sadness over the news.

Governor Alia strongly condemns the attack on unarmed innocent citizens of Benue State by armed bandits, expressing worry that such heinous act has continued in the state despite strong security presence and the regular dialogue sessions his administration has been holding with Stakeholders, and traditional rulers seeking the return of peace in Sankera.

He, however, makes a firm determination to continue to use lawful procedures to protect Benue people, particularly Ukum which has been on the front line of attacks lately.

The Governor calls on security personnel to improve their surveillance and also ensure that vulnerable communities are not left unguarded while the government awaits the Judicial Commission of Inquiry to bring out its findings.

He condoles families that lost their loved ones in the attack, saying his thoughts of comfort and prayers are with them and with the entire people of Ukum Local Government.

Governor Alia adds that his administration will continue to explore both discreet and open measures to ensure that Sankera retraces her path of peace and lives happily again.

Also, commiserating with the family of the deceased, the Honourable Member representing Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo (Sankera) Federal Constituency, Prince Solomon Wombo strongly condemned the brutal killing of innocent residents of Ayati in Borikyo Council Ward of Ukum LGA by the suspected bandits.

"The sheer number of the casualty is unacceptable. These incessant acts of violence are unacceptable and have caused immense pain and suffering to the affected families and our constituency at large," the member of the House of Representatives said.

Hon. Wombo prays that God grants the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

According to him, no one deserves to die in such a brutal manner, and it's our collective responsibility to ensure that growing acts of insecurity are eliminated.

The lawmakers urged all to embrace peace as the safety of our people and development is our top priority. We can not continue to live in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, and it's high time all hands were on deck toward resolving the intractable security situation in Sankera.

He calls on the responsible authorities to take decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that such incidents do not reoccur. Our people deserve to live in peace and harmony, and we will do everything in our power to make sure that peace returns to our communities.
